DELHI: The global acquisition of Allied Domecq by Pernod Ricard and Fortune Brands will lead to a big-ticket brand transfer in India. Post-acquisition, the popular Teacher’s scotch whisky brand will move from the Allied stable to Jim Beam, which represents Fortune in the Indian market. In a statement on Thursday, Fortune reiterated its commitment to continue building the Teacher’s brand.

The changeover is part of the post-acquisition global takeover of some of Allied’s top brands by Fortune, including Sauza tequila, Courvoisier cognac, Canadian Club whisky, Laphroaig single-malt scotch and Clos du Bois wines. Commenting on the move, Rupert Patrick, vice president, global travel retail & affiliates, Jim Beam Brands, said, “Jim Beam Brands is delighted to own a successful brand like Teacher’s scotch whisky in India and recognises Teacher’s market leadership in the ‘Bottled In India’ scotch segment. We have keen interest in the strategy adopted for the steady and robust growth of the Teacher’s scotch whisky portfolio in India, and are committed to take the brand forward to make it even more successful.”

Mr Patrick further added, “We recognise the great potential and opportunity for Teacher’s scotch whisky in the country and we will work closely with the team behind the successful operations in India. We are currently involved in the integration process for our businesses, following the acquisition. Further announcements on Fortune’s plans for the Teacher’s brand in India will be made in due course.”

ET had reported in its July 7 report that Teacher’s will move to the Fortune stable, and Kyndal, which handles the Jim Beam brand in India, will also handle distribution and marketing of this Allied scotch brand.

Analysts also say Ballantine’s scotch may move to Pernod Ricard (and by extension, Seagram India). Ditto for Tia Maria liqueur, Old Smuggler and Long John scotch, as well as the domestic portfolio of Old Smuggler rum and gin. However, since there is still no clarity on the question of distribution of assets, it is not clear who will own ADSWI’s (Allied Domecq Spirits & Wine India) Behror Rajasthan facility.
