Glasgow gets a taste of Whisky Live

A TWO-day festival celebrating whisky is under way in Glasgow.

Thousands of visitors from home and abroad are expected to descend on Whisky Live in George Square to toast Scotland's national drink.

They will say "slainte" to malts and blends, including famous brands and best-kept secrets from across Scotland and around the world.

Dozens of whiskies are available for tasting and buying at the event, which is being held in a marquee.

Distillers and master blenders are on hand to deliver tutored tastings for novices and enthusiasts.

Last year's debut show was a big success and tickets for this year's event were selling at three times the rate of the 2004 event, with more than 1000 snapped up.

Organised by Whisky Magazine, the first Whisky Live event was staged in Tokyo five years ago, followed by the first UK event in London in 2001.

Organisers describe Whisky Live as Scotland's whisky-tasting event of the year.

This year there are 29 exhibitors, featuring distillers, blenders, independent bottlers and retailers, with 60 brands available to sample.

An afternoon-only ticket costs £11, all day £28 or two-day a ticket costs £46 - all offering from five to 15 tokens per day for whisky.

The event continues until 8pm, and it will run noon to 6pm tomorrow.

A spokeswoman for Whisky Magazine said: "Whisky Live Glasgow has much to offer with the varied tastings available, masterclasses, live music and regular nose-off competitions."
