Tall Sails & Ales Cruise

If you have a yen for the finest things in life – including handcrafted beer – and you like a twist on the typical tasting tour, hop aboard The Tall Sails & Ales Cruise next spring in the Gulf Islands on Canada’s balmy west coast.

The tour, Mar. 22-27, 2006, is a 5-day cruise hosted by tour operator Maple Leaf Adventures and Greg Evans, nationally-known brewing historian and executive director of the Maritime Museum of B.C. Under the sails of the historic tall ship Maple Leaf, sample the best brews and local cuisine of the spectacular Gulf Islands and southern Vancouver Island, B.C.

The area is known for award-winning micro-breweries. Highlights include island hopping, special tastings at local breweries not available to the general public, chef-cooked meals of local cuisine matched to the brews, and conversations over a beer with Evans about brew types, brew history, pairing food and beers, the “unbuttoned” social history of drinking on Vancouver Island. Guests will also experience the Gulf Island’s natural beauty, including spring wildflower meadows, shell beaches, forest walks and marine mammals.

No boating experience is required, but guests are welcome to lend a hand raising the 92-foot schooner’s sails or steering the ship to the night’s anchorage.

Trips aboard the Maple Leaf are listed in Frommer’s Canada as one of just six “Best Travel Experiences” in the country. They have also been featured on international television. Supporting local economies is a key tenet of this responsible tourism operator and the Tall Sails & Ales trip promotes the exceptional local brews of southwestern B.C. Maple Leaf Adventures is a member of CAMRA.

Mar. 22-27, 5 nights, $1895 CDN (approx. 950 GBP) includes all accommodation, meals, beer, shore excursions, lectures. Depart/return: Sidney, B.C. Information 1-888-599-5323 or +1-250-386-7245 or mapleleaf@mapleleafadventures.com Web: www.MapleLeafAdventures.com/tallsailsales.htm.

Additional 5-night tours of the Gulf Islands (without the brew tasting focus) run Mar. 29-Apr. 3, Apr. 5-10, Apr. 14-19, 2006.

Cheers

Maureen
