A few tasting notes from our Easter visit to Islay ...

Bowmore 1989 16yo L.E.

ABV - 51.8% .
Colour - Gold .
Nose - Lavender , slight peat and smoke .
Taste - Flowery (Lavender , Parma violets ) almost perfumy .
Finish - Long and Flowery
Comments - I was really looking forward to trying this one and it just proved i've really gone off Bowmore , they were definitely better in 1999 when i first went over to Islay !

Bruichladdich “Tonga” Valinch 1989 16yo

Cask - Bourbon Barrel(No.1880) Enhanced in Caroni Trinidad Rum .
ABV - 57.
Colour - Bright Gold .
Nose - Vanilla , fudge and the maritime freshness of a Bourbon Laddie intersperse perfectly with the sweetness of the Trinidad rum .
Taste - An unusual mixture , first the sweet rum then the creamy Laddie then the rum returns .
Finish - A long sweetness with a creamy fudge tone .
Comments - A pretty good rum finished malt , goes down really well though the rum can dominate a tad too much .

DTC 1966 39yo Bruichladdich

Cask - 190
ABV - ?.
Colour - Bronze.
Nose - Oak , vanilla , typical Laddie coastal .
Taste - Creamy , fudge and vanilla .
Finish - Soft and smooth .
Comments - A highly drinkable old Laddie , but then again which old Laddie isn't !

Bruichladdich Infinity

ABV - 46%.
Colour - Dark bronze .
Nose - Typical sherried dram but with a slight rubber/sulphur nose .
Taste - Dry (Oloroso ?) , dry fruit .
Finish - Medium Dry , very sherry .
Comments - A nice sherried Laddie but give me a bourbon one anytime !

Bunnahabhain 12yo Portwood Finish

ABV - ?.
Colour - Red !
Nose - Port , slight Salt and cream.
Taste - Red fruits , vanilla and very coastal.
Finish - Long and fruity .
Comments - I raved about this at last years festival and had to try it again .....i wasn't disappointed ! Still as well balanced as what i remembered , crackin' Dram !

Bunnahabhain 18yo

ABV - 43%
Colour - Light Amber .
Nose - Light sherry with marshmallows , vanilla and cinder toffee .
Taste - Dried fruits , spice , vanilla , as the dram goes on the sherry starts to dominate .
Finish - Not too long , a bit flat but not unpleasant .
Comments - A typical sherried Bunnahabhain , very easy drinking , would have been nice to see this at CS to see how it compares to the previous older versions .

I was also going to try the 25yo at the same time but it was a touch expensive at £17.50 a shot and i'd already had my treat in the shape of a 39yo DTC Laddie .....

Gordon and Macphail Private Collection Caol ila Demerara Rum Finish

ABV - 45%.
Colour - light-bright gold.
Nose - Peat and slight smoke followed by sweet rum and sugar .
Taste - the Caol ila medicinalness , Peat and a slight rum taste.
Finish - A medium peaty finish . .
Comments - not the most effective rum finish , weak but opens up given enough time.

I have found that if that happens you get to try older malts and more of them, its still up to you to buy if you want, i tasted lots at Tullibardine and i only paid for the basic tour. Iended up buying a bottle that cost £75 along with something else so we both goit something out of it Laughing Beer

What drunk Laughing They were lovely to us at Tullibardine as well, this is a must for anyone visiting a distillery for the first time. Doesn't look much from the outside but the whisky stores are excellent and look quite cavinous.
