Went to see this much talked about film over the weekend, & I was pleasantly surprised. Having read & enjoyed the book I was a bit worried about seeing the film after it got such a panning by the critics. I need not have worried, for not the first time the"intelectual elite" who call themselves film critics got it totally wrong!
The film sticks very closely to the book, so if you like the book, you'll like the film. It was critised for being too long, but at times I thought it was not long enough, as various parts seemed rushed - my only critisism.
Tom Hanks has been panned for a "lackluster" performance, but he played the part of Robert Langdon as it was written!! The character is not an action hero - not your typical hollywood steroetype, but a Harvard professor, bookish, intellegent, but not someone who gets into a fight everyday. When Hanks acts "lackluster" he is acting how the character portrayed would act.
This is typical of a lot of the critisism the film has had, because it's not your typical "no brain shoot em up" hollywood action thriller, & actually gives the audience something to think about the critics have run scared from it!!
I'm not for one minute saying that the film is anything other than fiction, but it is a very clever fiction, that explores alternative versions of history that have been around for years. "The Holy Blood & The Holy Grail", which has been heavily referenced in the book & the film was written in the early 1980's, & numerous other books have been written about the origins of christianity that touch on elements mentioned. There is an old saying that "history is written by the victors" & that is certainly true of the Catholic Church! That's not to say, that anything "sugested" in the book or film is a truer version of events than those suggested in the bible, we will never know now!! But from the point of view that after 2000 years of fear of persecution as a heretic, people can finally debate freely & openly about Jesus & where Christianity came from, I think it has been a great thing!
But I'm babbling off topic here!!
Go & see the film - it's a fun 2 hours, that'll give you something to think about on the way home from the cinema - if nothing else!! |

I saw that documentary too!! They certainly look very "cultish" to me!! & how so called "Christians" can condone physical abuse of themselves or anyone else is, well, unbelievable! It's .................just not christian!! Didn't Jesus say "love thy neighbour as thyself"? Does Opus Dei then say "flagelate thy brother as thyself"!!!!????!! |
