Just back from Islay and currently in Perth for a few days. Finally got to visit all 7 distilleries on Islay and had a friggin' blast! I even managed to taste at least a couple of dozen Isaly malts while at the Lochside and Duffy's Pub (next door) and have some of the more memerable to ones to tell you all now.

While at the Bruichladdich distillery I met 3 gents who were happily bottling their cask of a Port Charlotte Bloodtub, since they were staying at the same hotel I was lucky enough to get a sample of this fine malt Smile

Bruichladdich Port Charlotte Bloodtub

Distilled: 2001
Bottled: 22-06-06

1st fill sherry cask (small)
60.1% acl/vol

Color: Mahogany

Nose: Sweet and Smoky

Palate: Sherry sweet with tons of peat and smoke. the sherry mates well with the peat. Chewy!

Finish: Exceptionally long with chewy peat, simply scrumptious!

OMG! this is only a 5 yr old????? A definate 90!

I got to try another "Bloodtub" while at the Lochside and then bought a bottle.

Murray McDavid Bloodtub Valinch Irish Peated

Distilled: 1993
No bottling date

Sherry cask
58.5% acl/vol

Color: Mahogany

Nose: Sweet and Spicy

Palate: Sweet with a touch of peat and smoke. A spicy Christmas fruitcake. The perfect yule time dram!

Finish: Lip smacking good! A good length, sweetness gives way to a smoky ending. Can I have more?!! :D

Port Ellen 21yr old Old Malt Cask The Whisky Shop

Distilled: 1982/Nov.
Bottled: 2004/Sept.

Sherry cask

Color: Deep Mahogany on the verge of Ebony

Nose: Sherried (chocolate?) cherries and peaty smoke

Palate: Slightly creamy then drying. Sweet sherried peat explodes on the tongue.

Finish: Peaty, smoky, and chewy.

An excellent dram! The sherry marries well with the peatiness of the Port Ellen. 88

Sounds like an excellent time and great whiskies. Whereabouts in Perth are you, my in-laws live in Crieff just outside of town 5 min walk from Glenturret and I have an aunt that lives in Perth. Good Oddbins in Perth that allow tastings and usually have a special offer or two on malts.

Glad you had a good time !
The Murray McDavid Bloodtub Valinch Irish Peated was from the 2005 Feis Ile , there were 4 in total this one (a cooley) , a 1991 Ardbeg , A Caol Ila and a Laphroaig . Some people felt cheated by these as they didn't realise they were just finished in the bloodtubs and not matured in them , which imho was pretty obvious as a whisky in a bloodtub from say 1991 would be WELL sherried given what a 5yo looks like.....

Just finished updating the Kilchoman distillery page on my site with the photos of our brief tour with Paula during the festival .
So if you want to see what the newest distillery on islay looks like have a butchers....
