Boffins at Glasgow University are conducting research to see if a pint of cider a day could keep the doctor away.

English cider apples have high levels of phenolics - antioxidants that protect against strokes, heart disease and cancer. Phenolics are also key to the drink's colour and taste.

Over the coming weeks, 12 volunteers will each drink a pint of cider a day and avoid all other sources of antioxidants.

The study is part-funded by the National Association of Cider Makers.

"This could mean that drinking a glass of cider is not just tasty, but a natural way to increase phenolics in a person's diet," said study director Serena Marks.
