Has anyone got any whisky bargins recently???
Been a bit of a lean year on the old cash front, so having to choose my purchases carefully, but not seen too many good bargins so far this year.
Wish I'd bought a couple of bottles of the 10 yr old Talisker for £14.99 when it was on special offer at Asda last Christmas!
Still nearly to the season to be merry, so should be some supermarket special offers soon!!! |

yes, the talisker was a good buy
sainsburys have 33% of christmas gifts at the moment and these include innis and gunn special bottling, 3 bowmore minis (different) for under £6 and a number of other drink related items, i bought a few on sunday but well worth a look _________________ i've been on a whisky diet, i've lost 3 days already

Just been to the Local Tescos and snaffled an Ardbeg TEN for £21.47 , others on offer (never took much notice after spotting the TEN ) .
Did notice a Famous Grouse gift set of 3 x half bottles for under £30 which included the ordinary , 10yo and 18yo .

Taste test.... festive foods
Restaurateur Oliver Peyton joins Tony Turnbull and Sheila Keating to pick out the best Christmas fare in the supermarkets
CHRISTMAS PUDDINGS
Duchy Originals Organic Christmas Pudding, 454g, £5.99
Smells delicious, fruity, with just enough booze. Light and moist, you could easily find room for this.
The Carved Angel, Waitrose, 680g, £14.99
Nicely spiced with a touch of ginger, this isn’t too sweet or sticky. A little different, but decent nonetheless.
Fortnum & Mason’s King George Christmas Pudding, 454g, £16.95
The texture is a little chalky, but it’s a perfectly acceptable pud.
Tesco Finest Ultimate Christmas Pudding, 907g, £9.99
Almonds and cherries on top? They’re overdoing the whole thing. It’s so sugary, you dread having to swallow any of it.
STUFFING
Waitrose Apricot and Almond Stuffing, 450g, £2.49
At least this looks good, you can see promising chunks of apricot lurking in there. A bit more fruity tang would have been nice, but there’s much worse stuffing out there.
Tesco Pork and Apple Stuffing, 250g, £2.99
Tastes a little bit like pork, a little bit like apple. That’s all you can say, really. Perfectly inoffensive
Asda Extra Special Pork, Prune and Cognac Stuffing, 400g, £2.08
Very sugary. There’s an odd Asian flavour, something like hoisin sauce with caramel chucked in.
M&S Pork, Sage and Onion Stuffing, 340g, £2.19
The only thing that really stands out about this is that it’s quite gristly. It’s just stodge really, something else to try to hide under your napkin.
GRAVY
Duchy Originals Fresh Organic Gravy, 500g, £2.29
Very pale, and looks a lot like baby food. You get a floury, undercooked flavour to it – more seasoning might make it more palatable. Perhaps you could improve it by adding your own meat juices.
Tesco Poultry Gravy, 600g, £1.69
Hmm… that’s a rather unexpected flavour. There’s a Marmitey tang and a burnt-spud finish. It’s not as though making homemade gravy is a huge inconvenience, is it?
Bisto for Turkey Gravy Granules, 170g, 79p
Well, it is what it is… but what it happens to be is salty gloop, with a plastic sheen that’s guaranteed to turn into skin before too long
Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Poultry Gravy, 320g, 99p
This is very viscous, with an immediate front-end taste of synthetic chicken. Not unlike a bad packet soup.
CHIPOLATAS
Duchy Originals Chipolatas with Honey and Rosemary, £3.35 for 8
Very nice. The pork seems decent and not too fatty, plus you get a nice peppery flavour and well balanced herbing.
M&S, £3.49 for 12
Big chunky texture looks promising, but where’s that nice sausage taste? All the fun of heartburn with none of the flavour.
Waitrose Premium Pork Chipolatas, £1.99 for 12
A little bland these – makes you suspect there’s a fair amount of breadcrumbs and other filler chucked in. Not horrid, just completely unmemorable.
Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Pork Chipolatas, £2.19 for 12
If you’re after a rubbery sausage that tastes a little bit like liver, you’re in for a treat. Otherwise, avoid.

CRANBERRY
Tesco Fresh Cranberry Sauce, £1.69
With this much sugar and cinnamon, this is basically a pudding. Serve it with some nice yoghurt and you’re away. If it wasn’t so sweet, it’d be fine to have with turkey.
Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Cranberry Sauce, 200g, £1.09
Tastes like a dusty old spice cupboard. Absolutely horrible, this should have a government health warning.
Ocean Spray Original Cranberry Sauce, 190g, 87p
You wouldn’t know this was meant to have cranberries in, it’s just preservatives right across your palate.
English Provender Co Organic Wild Cranberry Sauce, 240g, £1.59
Utterly vile.
MINCE PIES
Asda Extra Special Mince Pies, £1.68 for 6
These taste spot on. There’s a freshness to them, the mincemeat actually tastes of fruit rather than alcohol and the thin pastry means it’s better cooked.
Waitrose All Butter Mince Pies, £1.99 for 6
Quite tasty. The pastry is nice and buttery, and the filling isn’t too raw or boozy.
Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Brandy-Rich Mince Pies, £1.49 for 6
Pastry is fine and the filling looks rich and appetising, so it’s a shame all the flavour is overpowered by the alcohol.
Somerfield Best Ever Mince Pies, £1.49 for 6
Musty gloop. Leave one of these for Santa and you can expect a stocking full of coal.
CHRISTMAS CAKE
Tesco Finest Christmas Cake, 907g, £9.84
The fancy icing looks a bit naff, but the cake itself is a good ’un: moist, lots of cherries and almonds and a good marzipan flavour.
Duchy Originals Christmas Cake, 900g, £15.95
You get a nice marmalade tang and it’s not too dry. There are plenty of nuts too, they’ve not just bulked it out with raisins
Waitrose Seasons Greetings Christmas Cake, £4.99
If you can cope with an underlying burnt flavour, this should be manageable.
M&S Connoisseur Fully Iced Cake Bar, 1.38kg, £19.99
There’s an odd and unappetising toffee flavour, plus the icing is chewy and hard to work through. Horrid.
BRANDY BUTTER
M&S, 215g, £2.49
Just about perfect, hard to see how you can improve on this. It’s just sweet enough, creamy and tastes of brandy. It’s not rocket science, is it?
Markus Products Somerset Cider Brandy Butter, Waitrose, 175g, £2.95
Very soft and not too sweet. The cider brandy gives it a fruity finish.
Tesco Brandy Butter, 150g, £1.49
If it wasn’t quite so sugary, this would be very nice, as all the other elements are there.
Waitrose Fine Cognac Brandy Butter, 225g, £2.07
Very pale, looks just like margarine. You immediately get a rather raw alcohol taste and then a really sugary finish

WHISKY
Bailie Nicol Jarvie, Old Scotch Whisky, Tesco, £11.46
BNJ is proud of its Highland and Island high malt content (way more than Teacher’s), and rightly so, its gingery spice making for a delectable dram.
Teacher’s Highland Cream, Co-op, £9.49
With a hefty 45 per cent malt content Teacher’s is a bolder blended whisky with lots of strong, dry, malty flavours that make it a good mixer.
Bell’s 8 Years Old, Co-op, £9.99
Gentle, smoky, fruity stuff, naught to excite the tastebuds but naught to offend them, either.
The Famous Grouse, Co-op, £9.99
Like the Bell’s, a simple blended festive whisky whose sweet, smoky, heathery style will have wide, easy-glugging Christmas appeal.
SHERRY
Solera Jerezana Fino del Puerto, Waitrose, £5.99
Utterly gorgeous fino whose yeasty, sea-salty, full-bodied 16.5 per cent alcohol palate delivers a terrific blast of authentic flavour.
Sticky Pudding Wine, Pedro Ximenez, Barbadillo, 50cl, Sainsbury’s, £6.79
Luscious, tangy, moscatel raisin-scented sherry made from dried pedro ximenez grapes.
Tio Pepe, Gonzalez Byass, Tesco, £8.25
Appealing bouquet of yeast and iodine but let down by dull, watery, 15 per cent alcohol palate and bitter finish.
Harveys Bristol Cream, Tesco, £4.88
Dull, sweet, sappy scent and taste with absolutely no sherry solera charm or style. Ditch contents and admire traditional bright-blue Bristol glass bottle instead.
PORT
Sainsbury’s 2000 LBV Port, £6.99
Dusky scent, and sweet, earthy, plummy palate plus a long, tangy, dusky finish. Too earthy for me.
Cockburn’s Special Reserve, Tesco, £8.99
A standard ruby pretending to be something it ain’t. Faintly plummy scent and palate but too much raw, inky spirit to be drinkable
2001 Taylor’s Late Bottled Vintage Port, Tesco £7.98
Like the vast majority of late-bottled vintage port, this big seller is really a superior ruby and its bland, woody palate is way too young and spirity.
Croft Platinum Reserve Port, Sainsbury’s, down from £10.99 to £5.49 until December 31
Bland, vaguely fruity scent leads on to a coarse, spirity palate. For mulled wine and cooking purposes only.

All the whiskies are blends, this wouldn't be that great a Christmas feat then The ports look a better bet in this list. _________________ https://www.facebook.com/Let-the-drink-talk-675586225966432/ |
