STOP (Save The Oberon Pub)
We hope that you're all willing to join in the campaign to Save The Oberon Pub from closure? The Oberon is one of Hull's most famous, historic and traditional pubs. In reality, the only chance we have got against the closure it to strongly petition and send objections in to the Planning Department at Hull City Council - you can object by email.
PLEASE spend a couple of minutes to send an email or a letter objecting to the pub's closure.
Your emails should be sent as follows, and put a few reasons about how you've used the pub and want it to stay as a pub.
Cut and paste some of the wording in italics below if you wish - but add a bit of your own personal stuff as well.
Please DON'T LEAVE THIS ONE FOR OTHERS TO OBJECT TO - OR WE WILL LOSE THE PUB!
Many Thanks...

OBJECTION TO PLANNING APPLICATION 14947B
THE OBERON, QUEEN STREET, KINGSTON UPON HULL
I/We would like to OBJECT to the planning application for change of use and external alterations to the rear of The Oberon public house in Hull.
The Oberon is one of Hull’s long-standing traditional public houses that has stood since the mid 19th century and has been known as The Oberon since 1895.
In recent years the pub was famous for its patronage by the Humber Pilots and has been a favourite Old Town traditional pub frequented by a very mixed age group, unlike so many pubs in the Old Town area that cater for ‘fashion circuit’ drinkers.
The pub has a traditional plan form, retaining two separate rooms and is considered by local CAMRA members to be a friendly, trouble free environment in which to drink and socialise.
However, the loss of the Oberon to office use is not considered an acceptable alteration. The Oberon building is best used as a traditional public house, a use that it has been for approximately 150 years.
The local CAMRA branch was pleased to be involved in the recent ‘Local List’ initiative implemented by the Council. The Oberon was one of the pubs that merited inclusion in the List and the building forms an important part of the Southern Old Town Conservation Area. The Local List description indicates the Oberon Hotel was refronted in c1890 with a fine classical façade. The building looks for all its worth a public house/hotel.
The Oberon should be preserved and retained as a public house and I/We strongly objects to the proposed change of use application.

Hi all,
Further to the previous correspondence on the Oberon public house on Queen Street in Hull and the branch's campaign to retain the ground floor as a pub.
When I walked passed it on Saturday night I noticed that all the second and third floor window frames were in a skip in the street and new upvc sash windows had been fitted.
As the planning permission for the building was recently refused, and as it is in a conservation area, I thought that this was a breach of planning policy.
Having checked with one of the council's conservation officers today they have confirmed that it is in fact a breach of planning policy. This is because they have not replaced 'like for like' and have not obtained planning permission to do otherwise.
Fortunately the conservation officer had also noticed the change and has informed the council's enforcement officer. However, he feels that the more complaints received the better (especially from external bodies) so I have sent in a letter of complaint on behalf of the branch.
Cheers.
Alan. |
