I have purchased a bottle of the evilly-marketing-droid-named 'Serendipity.' The story they tell at the distillery is that several barrels of very old Ardbeg had been removed to a bottler's in (Glasgow?) to be packaged, and hence emptied into a holding tank for the bottling system. There was an oops, and someone emptied a quantity of Glen Moray into the same tank, ending up with an 80/20 mix of Ardbeg to Glen Moray. The Glen Moray is a highland malt, sweet and floral, and Ardbeg is...well...not. After (presumably) heads rolled, someone got around to drinking some of it (no doubt with a sorrowful mien, or possibly with a 'haha, look what we get for free!' mien) and it was...tasty.

Enter the marketdroids.

Hence, the Serendipity. It's a blend, technically - a blend of two single malts, 80/20. It's also pretty damn yummy, I think. They have (they claim) no plans to do it again, having had no plan to do it the first time, if you believe 'em - which I might, old Ardbeg being rare enough that mixing it on a marketer's say-so seems foolhardy when the stuff sells mighty well all by its lonesome. It's Ardbeg, but with a nice sweetness running through it - not quite as brickbat-to-the-head-peat as the usual stuff. So they have a couple thousand bottles...while I'm sure distributers in the U.S. can get it if they try, why the hell not?

Serendipity NAS (40%, <place>OB</place> , vatting of Ardbeg and Glen Moray)

Golden yellow. Very fruity. Citrus, nutty. Some sulfer earth feel. Cake? Very lightly peated. Even more nutty when tasting. Seems like about 12yo, maybe 15yo. Finished dry. And not bad. Adding water got orange feel. And quite nice. Score:77. General speaking not bad. But something I don’t like in it.

Serendipity (40%, OB, ‘Supreme blended malt’) This one has already caused much ink (and bytes) to flow, as it’s a ‘blend’ of some Glen Moray that has been vatted by ‘mistake’ with 80% Ardbeg 17yo. I had believed it was an April’s fools’ joke but it wasn’t any, it appears. Yet, Ardbeg wrote on its website: ‘… the effect is quite outstanding. So outstanding, in fact, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was deliberate’. Frankly, why would we think that? Anyway, let’s taste it… Colour: straw. Nose: some cider, some nuts and not much else, I’m afraid… Mouth: a little weak and grainy, rather drinkable but offering no special interest. The finish is short to medium, with just some hints of peat. Well, supreme it isn’t, but the story is. 78 points.

Looking forward to your notes on this one. I like both whiskies so I imagine a smoother version of Ardbeg should be OK.

I got the mailing for this from Ardbeg when they suggested Confused it was a mistake (honestly). I will await your review before purchasing a bottle. I would of thought most of it would be sold by now, or are they having a hard time shifting the bottles? Confused

just visited my local oddbins in darlington, county durham and purchased 2 bottles or ardbeg serendipity, will post a tasting when the effects of the madras curry has passed.
whilst i was in darlington i popped into the local house of fraser store for a coffee (i get it cheeper cos my wife works for the consession that has the cafes).
they have quite an impressive selection of malts, the also have a large selection of real ale from many micro breweries and not a can in sight.
they also sell cigars, foreign lager/beer and glassware.
well worth a visit :D :D :D

Can't beat a good curry though, pint of real ale and then a small dram of whisky to finish - well that's my weekend set up :D

wife is going away tomorrow down to brighton to see family for a few days.
i am sorted with some good ale and a few whisky tastings to do (n curry though) Razz Razz Razz
